Massage therapy in Indiana is a heathcare service that specifically works with the external manipulation of soft tissue. It includes hands on work and the use of heat, cold, water, ice, stones, and other massage devices along with topical applications (not prescription drugs) IC 25–21.8-1-4 “Massage therapy”
Sec. 4. “Massage therapy” Massage therapists in IN will have their massage license number on their advertisements. (IC 25-21.8-4-3.5 Advertisement prohibitions) and will also display their license on the wall of their office where they practice massage. (IC 25-21.8-4-4Proof of licensure)
Massage therapists in Indiaa have successfully completed a board approved program in at least 625 hours of training. They have passed an exam approved by the board of massage and have passed a background check as prescribed by IC 25-0.5-1-9IC 25-21.8-4-2Qualifications
Massage therapists in IN are allowed to use the titles:
(A) the title “Certified Massage Therapist”, “Massage Therapist”, “Licensed Massage Therapist”, “Medical Massage Therapist”, “Clinical Massage Therapist”, “Masseuse”, “Masseur”, “Bodyworker”, “Muscle Mechanic”, or a similar term; or
(B) the abbreviation “CMT”, “MT”, “LMT”, “MMT”, or other initials, words, letters, abbreviations, or insignia to imply that the individual is a licensed massage therapist or practices massage therapy; or
Other types of practitioners may practice without a massage license such as people who are trained in and practice things like The Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Rolfing, Trager Approach, Polarity Therapy, Ortho-bionomy and Reflexology.
